Hi Jake, just thought I would add, I believe the skill sets for working/finishing with wood and fibreglass are pretty much the same despite the fact they are very different materials, it’s all about time, patience, consideration and confidence. IMO both lovely materials to work with, let us know how you get on!

Apologies Jake, the photos are not great, also for getting your name muxedip! Been doing quite a few fibreglass gel coat repairs myself with some decent results, almost invisible repairs are possible with care, just the most amazing material!
Yacht varnish is a good finish, a few coats are required with rub downs with a fine grit paper between coats to get the best finish, always sanding in the same direction of the surface grain.
Oil finishes can be good, Danish oil and the like, can be brush applied, or, applied with a lint free cloth, like fibreglassing, the more care and time achieves the best results. If using a cloth, make sure you use disposable gloves as it can leave you with messy hands!
The table and the sink top are actually oak chopping boards I purchased and came with an oil finish, the table is actually thicker than it looks and I haven’t fitted the fiddles yet but will get around to it sometime, the sink top now has oak pieces fitted to the sides where you can see holes in the photo. The bulkhead next to the sink will have another chopping board fitted for the brass instruments and cup hooks! (purists look away)
Good luck with your project, the Bosun 20s are lovely boats but you have a bit more woodwork!

Hi Mike, some pictures of the woodwork on our Hardy MS boat, there's not a lot of it on the MS 18 boats!

Hi colin would you mind sending me a few pictures of your wood work please when you have a chance ?
Im looking at various ideas , im a self employed marine engineer /fiberglasser , so anything metal or fiberglass id say im good at fixing or getting a decent finish on , but wood work has always been my nemesis haha ,
Thanks

Interesting thoughts. The previous owner of my Hardy Pilot completely removed the bulkhead as part of a major overhaul. He replaced it with white 'wallboard' that gives the boat a light airy feeling. The steering wheel was replaced with a stainless steel version. Might not be way the purists like but I think it is really good.

Hi Jake,
Our MS 18 has the usual original varnished woodwork and looks very good in my opinion, I made a smaller table for the cabin from oak, also a matching oak top for the free standing gas cartridge cooker next to the sink, both of these have an oiled finish which I thiink looks very nice, I'm proposing to fit a similar board above the sink bulkhead for the fitment of brass instruments and solid brass cup hooks, that will also probably have a similar finish.
People seem to be vinyl wrapping everything that moves these days, cannot say I am personally that taken by it but I guess it's what suits your taste/preference!
2K coating? Varnish/clear or paint? Don't know much about this type of 2 pack finish but have heard of a few problems in relation to 'spider web cracking' if it's not done correctly, bearing in mind that boat cabins can be a little damp, this is our 3rd boat of ownership and have to say the best so far as far as being dry - well since I resealed the cabin windows, despite the two constantly wettest years I can remember, and fitting a new auto electric bilge pump and resorted the original bellows type original Hardy fitment, I have never used either yet, removing a few cupfuls during that time from the bilges accessed by the smaller access panel located in the cabin floor, long may it stay like that!
Let us know what you opt for and how pleased you are with it!
