"You must be fairly agile!"-- No just old and v.wary of falling overboard...!
That sort of thing should do the job Colin, really good idea, thanks for the suggestion, appreciated. Peter

Hi Peter, have to say never tried gaining access through the hatch to the foredeck, you must be fairly agile! (Lol!)
If I was looking to do what you are, I would look at either making something like this, or purchasing something suitable which could be super glued to the hatch alongside the threaded rod, this would be used to secure the catch rod temporarily to prevent it falling and re-engaging, or remove the large nut from the rod and place it somewhere in the cabin for safety. (things put in pockets can be lost overboard)

They are the rubber stays fitted to cars to park/secure the bonnet stay, you can pick these up from auto dismantlers but I wouldn't think it that difficult to make one with a piece of rubber, that would be my preference!
Hope that helps!

Yes I'll probably stick with the same design in the end. One of my main gripes is the fact that if you open the catch when down below, open the hatch and then close it when on the foredeck (to stop the rain getting in) the catch can partially re-engage and prevent re-opening without going down below again. I use the hatch as my access to the foredeck while at sea to avoid using the side decks, so it's important to me that I can open it from the top.
I will have to devise a simple clip to hold the fastener up out of harm's way if I can't come up with anything else.

The only things I came up with were either very expensive marine grade stainless quality, or would be difficult to fit in the application concerned or would protrude too far into the cabin space and would likely be a hazard or just look unsightly.
I will be sticking with the solid brass version, they work and look okay as opposed to the originals which are more basic, easy to fix and are cheap as chips, not to mention the fact they are very similar to those Hardy fitted!
Why fix something which aint broken? the only thing I would be looking for is some type of graduated fitting that would allow partial opening of the hatch to aid through ventilation on days you require it, sadly not such a great consideration in the North where such days are few and far between sadly!
Good luck!
Col.

Yes I've found several similar items all with different names, but haven't found an alternative yet. I'll continue the search... Cheers Peter

Hi all
I think you'll find they're called "Brighton Fasteners". A search may come up with differing types that may be more suitable.

Thanks for that, I'll continue my search, but at least now I know I have a like-for-like replacement available, Cheers.

Hi Peter,
I wouldn't think it impossible to come up with something better than these, possibly something that permits various graduated opening stages, look at various systems fitted to uPVC windows and doors for ideas.
I note on yours that someone has fitted a non standard wing nut in place of the correct retainer piece, it was this part that was missing on our boat. You can also purchase this catch in solid brass finish which is the one I bought for ours, in my opinion looks a little bit better than the standard finish.

Well never had anything to do with sash windows, so that probably explains my ignorance....! I'd still prefer to change it for something better if anyone has another idea? Thanks for enlightening me.....

Part of the hatch lock was missing on our MS 18 when it arrived at Amble last year, these are a simple casement window sash lock and can be obtained just about anywhere, they are fairly cheap and easy to replace, just drill the old pop rivets out and refix the new one with either pop rivets or small suitable machine screws and lock nuts.

Your local hardware store may even have them, they are fairly common!

Hi all,
I need a new lock/fastener/catch for the front hatch on my Navigator. The existing one is well corroded (see pic), and has never been very user friendly. Very fiddly to fasten and catches when you don't want it to. However, I'm having a deal of difficulty finding a suitable replacement. Can't see anything online or on Ebay that fits the bill.
I've been looking at various combinations of bolts, hasps etc, but can't come up with anything that is simple to install and operate.
Has anyone replaced their's, and if so with what?
