Gday David. BWML Measure the length of boats on their moorings. The length charged is the length measured including bathing platforms, inflatables on davits and outboards etc. Including with canal boats the large pudding fenders at the stern. My bosun is 6.0m on the builders certificate and SSR certificate. The 0.5m extra could be for the outboard should the marina actually measure the length. Hull marina's rates start at 6.4m. Often thought that 6.4m would be closer to the mark with my outboard anyway. Would imagine the Marina have measured the length occupied? Regards. Martin. ps. Commercial vessels making their first transits of Canals such as Panama and Suez are boarded by Canal Surveyors who confirm the vessels dimensions, tonnages etc. To ensure charges levied are correct rather than take the ships figures as being gospel.

Hi David, I think you need to look at your terms and conditions on the mooring. If it says LOA (Length over all) then you pay for what they can measure and that includes the outboard. if it states boat length or similar wording then you may have a case to argue !!! The problem is that these days every one is trying to maximise their income and in a lot of marina cases they can basically do what they want as there is a shortage of berths. Over the past 30 years we have had moorings in a number of marinas and boat yards, some have had a minimum length charge and some have just taken our word for the length. The Bosun is actually 19ft.6" (6 metres) without the outboard so you may be on a sticky wicket. I do know a yard here in Norfolk who charge for a bathing platform and one that charges for the pontoon length no matter the size of the boat along side it. Regards, Peter

Hi David, I know on some marinas they DO include OBs although they have not done so for me!! I assume you've run the tape over yours; also sometimes they round it up a bit! Good luck with your struggle! Mike

I am having a little disagreement with my marina over the length of my boat, a 2004 Hardy Bosun. My builder's certificate says 6 metres yet my marina is insisting it is measured at 6.5 metres, not a big difference but it takes me into their next price bracket, are they right or are they just trying to squeeze some more money from me? It does make a noticeable difference in cost . Any advice/comment? Is the additional .5 for the outboard I wonder?
