Hi Robert, I am glad I was of assistance and that the problem is now sorted and that the boat is dry. Regards Simon Papendick

Hi Simon, thank you very much for your advice. Removed the outboard engine cleaned up the transom and countersunk the holes as you suggested. Plenty sealer and reinstalled the engine. Relaunched last week and everything bone dry. Again many thanks, Robert.

Hi Robert, The sikaflex is fine for both above the water and below, as for the marine plywood between the engine and the transom, there is no reason to fit anything between the two surfaces. Just use a reasonable amount of the sealant on each bolt when fitting each bolt and you should be fine. Regards Simon Papendick

Thanks Simon, I bought some Sikaflex 291i to do the job. Is this the right stuff for below the waterline? Also do you think it would be beneficial to install some marine ply between transom and outboard. Kind regards, Robert.

Hi Robert, I would be very surprised if the marine plywood in the area of the transom is in need of replacement as this would have to be a major problem for a large number of years before any delamination would take place. If you want, you could always inject epoxy resin into the holes and seal up the plywood core from any further water ingest. I would use sikaflex sealant to seal the bolts when you refit the engine bolts. Regards Simon Papendick

Thank you Simon. There was obviously stained water coming from the bolt holes internally which made me think the transom wooden core might need replacing. As it is an older boat it was causing me some worry. I will definitely now remove the engine from its mountings and carry out your advice. Thanking you once again, Robert.

Hi Robert, It will not cause any lose of integrity to the transom as the lay up of the gelcoat on the outside and the matting on the inside are of a great deal of thickness in lay up of both. When did fit engine at Hardy's it was the way we did this installation to ensure there was little or no chance of any leakage through the lower bolt holes. It was also done to the upper holes as well as this is the way to do this job correctly. Regards Simon Papendick

Thanks Simon. I am speaking to the guys at the marina at some point on Monday so thank you for the countersinking idea. As long as the integrity of my transom has not been compromised I will definitely be giving this a go. Kind regards, Robert.

Hi Robert, I have had this problem in the past and resolve it by countersink the holes on the outside and inside faces with a large countersink bit. This made the area round the holes into a area that when the sealant was applied acted as a sealant washer and forming a seal on both ends of the through bolts. Regards Simon Papendick

Hi all, hope you are all having a good start to the season. Having a little trouble with my outboard engine transom bolt holes on my Family Pilot 20. I had a Suzuki DF70 fitted last year which runs well, however mid way through the summer I started to get water coming through the lower mounting bolts. It was returned to the marina where the engine was fitted and the mounting holes re sealed prior to dry storing for the winter. Back out on the water again last week and water yet again coming through the lower mounting bolts. I have emailed the installers and waiting for a reply. Has anyone else experienced this situation. Kind regards, Robert.
