Thanks Simon. Removed helm and visited chandler. New helm purchased and managed to keep the same cable. Job done. Regards, Robert.

I'm not sure on the type fitted as this depends on the age of the boat, a few different units were fitted over time. You may be able to get a replacent part from the manufactuer - i.e. Morse / Teleflex / Ultraflex.. It's more likley a Morse unit fitted if original. I just replaced the unit on my naviagtor, If you have a late boat and if you're lucky you may find you can fit a new helm unit and keep the same cable. No harm in removing the helm and taking to a good chandler to match up - maybe a large chandler that sells and fits outboards? Simon.

Had some excessive free play on the wheel so investigated helm and discovered the plastic housing was cracked where the cable enters. It will need to be replaced so can anybody suggest a supplier. I have been onto my local chandler but seems more interested in selling me a complete unit with cables. I don't see any part or identification numbers to help identify the type fitted. Any advice?. Robert.
