Hi my coir rope is really bad and falling apart as the previous owner did not look after it so I am in damage limitations territory and think it is beyond help as this is a real feature of my Navigator 18. I would really love some help re new ones second hand ones if there is such a thing. Unfortunately I am in Ireland but any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi, I have a very good coir rope fender on a pilot 20 . How do I look after it. Is the wood preservative still the best way?

as promised Iam reporting back on the appication of weed killer to the rope fender during the winter lay up. Application of weedkiller once a month October to April has kept amy moss etc from growing on the rope fender. So it looks like this will be a regular task during the lay up. Mike Williams

Thanks Richard. So far i.e. October & November the B&Q weedkiller has been applied once a month & no weed / algae attack. Will be checking again on the 17th Dec on our monthly visit. Mike

Sorry cant remember my membership number ! Mike I have proofed mine using clear wood preservative and so far its worked really well. By the bulwark drains I have fixed some leather covers to protect the rope, these are covered in dubbin at beginning of season and again all good so far ! Not signs of rot or moss or green nastiness ! richard

I have been advised that spraying the coir fender with a moss & weed killer during winter substantially slows down rotting, especially under the bulwark drains, where rain runs off onto the rope fender. Armed with my B&Q moss / agae killer I have done this and will report the results - but has anyone else tried this and does it work ? I hate gardening, so "gardening" on my boat is not my idea of worthwhile activity ! Mike Williams
