Hi Gary, One way of getting a guide to max speed is to use a propeller calculater formula such as is available at: http://www.vicprop.com/calculator.htm Enter the data under the displacement and semi displacement box and see what you get. Hopefully you will find that 8 knotts is possible. regards Kelvin

We are looking to buy a Hardy 25 with an inboard diesel fitted One such craft has come to my attention and we will view it this coming weekend - it is fitted with a Volvo-Penta 3000 Series 30 hp claimed 8 knots with 6 knots cruising speed My question is first, is this feasible, as it seems a lot of boat for little engine? Second, will this engine be up to coastal/eastuary cruising? We are on the East Coast where the boat is currently situated? I'm not so much interested in the speed but would like to know that if required, the 8 knots IS there... All information will be very much appreciated

I own a 1983 Hardy 25 and have just replaced the original 36hp Volvo Penta MD17D with a brand new 40hp Volvo Penta D2-40 (both diesel). We use it on the inland waterways so speed is not an issue (its top speed being about 8 knots). I understand the Volvo Penta D2-55 and D2-75 would also fit. We had to replace the gearbox and saildrive, but the results are very impressive. It's so quiet, you can hear a pin drop. Ring Volvo sales department or Dave Hill at Darthaven Marina on 07973 280584 (Volvo engine dealers). Both are very helpful and know their stuff.

Steve, We have been investigating this, as you can see from the first post. We have a Bravo 3 leg but with the new generation of diesels we have been told we need the latest version of the Bravo 3 - previous versions are not up to dealing with the torque modern diesels put out. Consequently, any swap may well involve both engine & sterndrive being changed. To put a new Volvo diesel & sterndrive is coming out at around £18,000 but that includes all new instruments, hydraulics etc. As you already have a Volvo installation this may well bring bring the cost down. Also the way the economy is going I suspect by the Autumn biger discounts will be available. Feel free to stay in touch and swap info. Mike

Our 1992 Hardy 25 has a Mercruiser Diesel which is reaching the end of its life (and the end of our patience). We ned to re engine. Has anyone done this before and can give any insight into possible replacements ? A Yanmar diesel has been suggested and this would fit with our Bravo sterndrive. Has anyone put a Yanmar into a Hardy 25 ? All idea, suggestions and cautions gratefully received.
