David, I own a Hardy 537MS which is very similar to the Hardy 18 MS. Same hull but different sail rigging. My 537 has a well mounted engine with option for a transome mounted aux engine engine. The sales leaflet recommends 6 - 10HP. Mine was supplied new with a Yamaha 8HP 2-Stroke. I think 50HP may be overkill but i'm no expert. Okay with a 18' Pilot but the Motorsailors have a keel and bilge plates. I use my boat on the broads with tides up to 6nts with no problems

I see from the Gallery section there is a Hardy 18 M/S "Avocet" with an outboard mounted centrally on the transom. Could the owner contact me, I would like to ask a few questions as I am looking to employ similar on my Hardy 18 M/S and would like to understand as much as possible.

Mark, Thank you for you feedback. When you say try for a new one, is this referring to a new engine? Have you practical experience of installing in the well on a M/S18 or is it a recommendation?

Go for a 50HP in the well. Easy to put in not so easy to get out! So try for a new one if you can... Auxillary 5HP minimum on a bracket..

I am hoping to tap into the vast experience and knowledge of the Hardy members. I have a Hardy 18 M/S, will be doing more motoring that sailing. I see from various topics and pictures that there are 2 possible positions for outboard, on a bracket or in an engine well. Which would provide better performance? How easy or difficult is to to put in engine well? Has anyone any recomendation for make, model, spec for outboard for tidal and coastal use?
