I have a Yamaha 9.9 electric start on my Hardy 20 MS and find it a reliable, economic engine giving me about 5 knots, less than a gallon an hour. I can't help with the remote steering but no doubt there is some sage out there who can ! Roger

The 5hp Mariner 2-stroke auxiluary I have on my Pilot has just died a salty death. It's 10 years old and has just been hanging there doing nothing, except for a warm up before each trip so it's ready for use. Instead of spending £700 odd on a new similar 4-stroke that would also just hang there doing nothing, I was wondering about splashing out on a Yamaha 9.9 4-stroke or similar. This could mean that I would actually maybe get some use out of the motor. I have an 80hp main engine so would use the 9.9 for pottering around, fishing etc. I also do a holiday on the Shannon every year and a motor like this would give me a serious cruising range without having to worry about petrol stops too much. The extra Hp would also come in handy in a real break down situation. Has anyone got this engine or similar? I was wondering how viable it would be to use this motor on an outboard bracket and rig a steering mechanism up from the main engine? I would likely be getting the manual start tiller version due to price. Maybe you can retro fit remote controls to this motor? Not sure! The ideal one would be the electric start remote control model but this is seriously pricey! I would also condsider a high thrust prop. Can anyone give me any pointers on this? Maybe even someone who has this hp rating as a main engine for the river could give me an idea on how the Pilot performs? I'm not looking for speed, just a quiet 5 knots or so. Cheers, Andy
