Hi Kerry, the spring should be in there along with a plunger type valve, this valve can become stuck in it's bore especially if there has been water contamination of the fuel.regard's Barry.

After completing the service on my Pilot's Volvo Penta MD22, the engineer started her up to check everything was OK. Despite working perfectly up til then, the engine failed to stop. He diagnosed a failed stop solenoid (the pump is a Bosch EPVE) and offered to replace it (cost £194 + VAT for the part alone.) I found a replacement solenoid online delivered for £8.40 and fitted it. No joy. Tested voltage to the solenoid is supplied when ignition kill switch is operated. All OK. Removed solenoid and tested - seems to operate fine when earthed on engine body. Just won't kill engine. There is a spring in the body of the pump that fits over the end of the solenoid. I presume it was left there when I removed the old solenoid. Should it be? I'm really quite stumped. Help!
