Hi Mike I saw Arion in Poole last year over at Parkstone - Almost the Last of the Family Pilots!- You must be the lucky guy who bought her!! - the winch system was unusal - but very well thought out! The only downside was being careful not to trip on the starbord side deck, though coupled to the fact that you essentailly have anchoring single handed without having to go forward - a great solution - much safer in choppy seas and when short handed!! Si.

My Pilot 'Arion' has the starboard side deck capstan arrangement. It uses multiplait rode leading to a length of chain about 2.5 metre long and thence to the anchor which is fitted on a self-launcher. An absolute doddle to use directly from the cockpit which has a box to take the rode. I had replied to Roger by email, but of course should have used this format as well!

I have seen a few 18's and 20's fitted with winches, each tends to be an individual installation. Most have a part of the anchor locker lid bonded down and a large timber block fitted off set to one side to rase the windlass to the same level was the bow roller. One side of the anchor locker lid remains hinged to give access to the locker. The most important thing is to ensure the deck are under the windlass is heavily reinforced to take the winlass loads - this is very important as the 18's and FP20's weren't originally built to take a winch. I have also seen a winch on an FP20 fitted on the starboard side deck with blocks leading the anchor warp to the bow roller. Messy - but it did work. If in doubt, consult a boatyard who have good experience fitting winches - it pays to get it right first time around!

At the risk of going 'overboard' I've got a Simpson-Lawrence manual windlass (8mm chain) for my Navigator 18. Has anyone done similar? It will require a plate to be made to accomodate the windlass that will need to be sited above the chain locker - 'twill be the next project. I'm another use-of-one-arm bandit Hardy owner - Pete F. and all i've convesrted my Navigator to foot controls - one device for throttle on the right foot, and a gear change pedal under the left foot. Could post photos here if you're interested. PS if there's anybody interested in adapting boats around special needs, I will be glad to help.

George, It's still a job that I'm looking at for this winter. My current thought is that I may fit a electric casptan in one of the small recess in the moulding at the wheelhouse exit to the side decks (where I guess the sail winches were mounted for the motor-sailer?) This would then permit anchor recovery without leaving the wheelhouse if needed, and a simple matter of feeding into the anchor locker afterwards, but could also be run from for'ed feeding warp straight into locker with just the boat length to move by hand after anchor secured. It would then also be useful for heaving warps, etc. or even recovery of a speculative lobster pot?! Any thoughts or advice gratefully received. Regards, Pete

Peter French, Did you have any success with the electric anchor winch? I am interested in fitting one to my Hardy Pilot SE.

See PBO No. 463 - July 2005 for info on fitting electric winches for use with sails, but much the same as you want to do. PBO had another article on this about three years ago - give them a ring at Poole for a back copy. cheers Brian bartlett Ex HOC Magazine Hon. editor.

Folks, Has anyone fitted an electric anchor winch to a Family Pilot? I only have the use of one arm, so such a piece of kit would make life much easier, as the current arrangement of occassionally gripping a warp in one's teeth seems to offer endless opportunities for an early denture requirement! I've seen Pilots advertised with such kit, but would appreciate any experience, advice or learnings before I attempt anything. Many thanks...... Pete
